ABSTRACT
This article aims to study the evangelical beliefs of Rev. Philip Teng in the 1960s and elucidate the relationship of the faith continuity between him and the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Hong Kong. On one hand, this paper tried to reconstruct Teng’s practice of evangelical identity in the 1960s, and elaborated that through his participation in the International Christian Evangelicalism, he influenced some organizations such as the newly established Hong Kong Christian and Missionary Alliance District Association and North Point Church. Under Teng’s leadership, evangelical believers who held the Bible as their faith foundation and were enthusiastic about saving souls became synonymous with the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Hong Kong. Therefore, Teng’s connection with overseas church networks in the 1960s helped establishing the identity of the Hong Kong Christian and Missionary Alliance toward the global evangelical faith. On the other hand, this article presents Pastor Philip Teng’s religious thoughts and responses within the context of 1960s Hong Kong society. Serving primarily in institutions such as the Alliance Bible Seminary and the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Hong Kong, Rev. Teng advocated that the salvation of souls through the Gospel is the fundamental solution to social issues. He explored the role of Hong Kong Christians in society from an evangelical perspective, emphasizing that the church’s main mission is to change people through Gospel preaching. And in a specific time and space, the church should fulfill the social responsibility of evangelism as first priority, but not lose the relationship of participating in the society. It can be said that Teng’s view of inheriting evangelical beliefs in the 1960s not only focused on maintaining evangelical identity and practice, but also expressed the unique identity of Christians in the mainstream society and continued the Bible-based evangelical belief stance, thus laying the development tone of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Hong Kong and evangelical churches.
