本文從歷史的角度，探究主日學對教會培育信徒所作的貢獻。作者認為主日學不單是福音外展的橋樑，也是教會最早且最重要的教育部門，教導信徒認識聖經，遵守聖經教訓。此外，主日學也是信徒參與事奉的先河。可惜華人教會的主日學受本色化與教會處境的影響，無論在師資、課程、場地及行政各方面都存在重重障礙，停滯不前。為了迎接另一個新禧年的來臨，作者建議主日學應從三個不同的層面：屬靈層面、教學層面及實踐層面，突破現存的攔阻，重新尋求一條新路向，讓教會能透過主日學有果效的教導，使信徒得以成長，教會亦隨之增長。

ABSTRACT

This paper evaluates, from a historical perspective, the contribution of Sunday school ministry to the edification of believers. The writer argues that Sunday school ministry is not just a means of evangelization, but also the earliest and the most important Christian education ministry in the Church. It enables believers to understand what the bible says, and enables them to live out the biblical truth in their daily lives. Moreover, Sunday school ministry has marked the beginning of the ministry of the laity in the Church. However, the development of the Sunday school ministry in local Chinese churches today (such as the improvement of the qualification of teachers and the teaching arena, the design of curriculum, and the enhancement of administrative practice) has stagnated as a result of various cultural and situational limitations. To overcome the existing difficulties and work out a new path for the Sunday school ministry in the coming millennium, the writer suggests that local churches should strive for a breakthrough in the spiritual, educational and practical dimensions of the ministry. Effective Sunday school ministry ensures healthy growth of both the Church and believers.
