ABSTRACT

This article inquires into reasons for the Chinese government to arrest Watchman Nee in 1952, and evaluates the validity of charges filed against Nee, especially charges that are against his commercial and personal malefaction. According to documents gathered, it can be believed that the government’s accusations, though not without overstatement, were largely valid. Nee was first arrested for committing commercial crime, not for participating religious activities. And later his suspension by Christian Assembly (Shanghai) in the 1940s were related to matters of private morality; it was not due to his engagement in pharmaceutical industry during the time. The research helps to understand Watchman Nee’s life and theology, and also the circumstances of Christian churches in China in early 1950s.
