ABSTRACT

Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) is a rare genius. He is at the same time a mathematician, a physicist and an inventor. Yet known to relatively few people, he is also a deep philosophical and religious thinker. His masterpiece Pensees is a treasure in human literature, loved by people in all generations. Pascal can be seen as an anti-rationalist who had struggled with the main philosophical streams of his time. The rationalists of his time claimed that through reason alone man can reach final truths. Pascal, on the contrary, sees very clearly the limits of reason in face of the most basic religious and metaphysical questions. For Pascal, the dream of having an eternal philosophy here and now is forever a chimera. The current essay aims at extracting Pascal’s insights in the dialectic of faith and reason, and will try to show how he argues that reason must finally submit to faith in order to find God.
