ABSTRACT
The book of Psalms as a “small Torah” has its redactional orientation. This orientation directs readers to enter into a meditation of Torah that brings a transformation of life. This paper aims to introduce Sumero-Akkadian scribal education, exploring how this training influences the religious belief of the training scribes. Then I explore how we can understand the editor of the Psalter (i.e. Levitical singers) within this Mesopotamian scribal context. This paper contends that “Torah meditation” should be one of the prime concerns in the editing of the Psalter, and uses Psalm 1, 19, 119 to illustrate the point.
