Abstract:

The word Akkadian in the book title refers to Assyrian and Babylonian languages of ancient Near East. Prior works in the field retain their beauty and usefulness, however, they include only selections; Dr. Shao has included transliterations of the originals, and has labored to be inclusive, offering relevant analyses and comments. The author of the present work is willing to go beyond the familiar and venture into creative realms. Thus I believe the volume will provide assistance to readers seeking greater knowledge of the Ancient Near East; and it will enrich our understanding of the human interest in hymns and prayers, devotional poetry and supplications to the divine.
