ABSTRACT

This paper starts with a survey of the deliberations on the inherent nature of sacred space in spatial context leading to a rejection of the absolute opposition of sacred and profane in spatial terms as well as to the emergence of the study on the poetics and politics of sacred space. Then Kim Knott’s spatial approach that foregrounds the politics of space and deploys Henri Lefebvre’s “spatial triad” on the three interconnected aspects of space as a spatial analysis tool to expose the underline dynamic socio-political forces that impacted on the production of sacred space in contested spatial context will be covered. This article demonstrates that in such spatial analysis, it is important to recognize that sacred spaces are intrinsically distinctive places in their spatial contexts. They exist and express themselves in and through city space with a vision to live out a witness in the services of God. The last part of this article is a spatial analysis and a reflection on the spatial distribution of Christian and Catholic churches in Hong Kong anchored in their specific historical and temporal spatial contexts.

本文先行探討神聖空間位處城市空間的本質，指出神聖與世俗在空間本位上並非絕對的相互對立，並帶出空間的政治及空間的詩意兩個研討大方向。文章繼而檢視諾特（Kim Knott）所倡議的空間進路，引用列斐伏爾（Henri Lefebvre）的空間生產三元論作為空間分析工具，闡析在富競爭性的城市空間發展神聖空間所面對的社會政治因素。文章亦會展示在分析過程中要適切顧及神聖空間的獨特遠象，其顯現在城市空間為的是要彰顯及見證神對人的心意。文章最後分析了香港基督教及天主教教堂在特定時空下的空間分布，從而思考香港教堂發展的特色型態。
