ABSTRACT
In Hong Kong there are five Islamic institutions including two kindergartens, two primary schools and one secondary school founded and operated by the Chinese Muslim Cultural & Fraternal Association. Ethnic minority people in Hong Kong, especially Pakistani parents, mostly believing in Islam, would like to send their children there to study. Although the Chinese language is taught in these schools, to the ethnic minority children it is considered only as second or even third language.
This article intends to study both endowed strengths and difficulties encountered by these children in learning Chinese, thus to arouse the attention of educational parties. It is a case study on one of the five schools, Islamic Dharwood Pau Memorial Primary School, using data collected from interviews, classroom observation and pertinent literature. Moreover, reference data collected from other Islamic schools have also been consulted.
