晚清基督徒調適基督教與中國文化的嘗試──王謙如的「超儒論」研究/張志偉

撮要

本文擬以晚清廣東禮賢會名牧王謙如(1847-1907)作為個案,以探討晚清基督徒在調適基督教與中國文化方面的嘗試。筆者欲論說的是:王謙如的主要關懷並不在於證明基督教與儒家思想的一致性(「合儒論」),或基督教可以補充儒家思想的不足之處(「補儒論」);卻是力圖證明基督教在各方面均較儒家思想優勝,儒家思想實不能與基督教比擬(「超儒論」)。王謙如期望國人能在基督教、儒家之間作出明智抉擇——歸信基督。王氏晚年所建構的「超儒論」是徹頭徹尾的「佈道中心」及「福音中心」,他相信只要中國人歸信基督,那麼有關國家富強的政治、經濟等問題,便自能迎刃而解。

 

ABSTRACT

In this article, the author tries to use Wang Qianru (1849-1907), a prominent Chinese pastor of Guangdong Rhenish Church in late Qing period of China, as an example to illustrate the attempts made to relate Christianity to Chinese culture by Chinese Christians in the late nineteenth century. According to the author, the main concern of Pastor Wang was neither to demonstrate the harmony in ideology between Christianity and Confucianism (HeRu Lun), nor to prove that Christianity could supplement the defects of Confucianism (BuRu Lun); what Wang concerned was to testify that Christianity was surpassing Confusianism in different ways and beyond comparison (ChaoRu Lun). Wang had hoped that the Chinese could make the best choice among the two and become Christians. The construction of ChaoRu Lun in the latter part of Pastor Wong’s life was thoroughly preaching-centered and evangelism-centered. Wang believed that all political and economic problems relating to national prosperity and strength could be easily resolved if Chinese would become Christians.
