ABSTRACT

Rev. Philip Teng is one of the most prominent Evangelical figures of Hong Kong Christianity. In accessing his impact on the Chinese Church, much attention has been given on his pastoral ministry from a spiritual dimension. In this connection, Teng’s response to the socio-political issues is still a field not being cultivated.

With the contextual background of the Hong Kong Church in the early 1980s, this paper aims to investigate how Teng responded to two critical issues that shaped the Hong Kong Christian Church at that time, ie., Christian’s social involvement, and China-Hong Kong relationships respectively. Special attention will be paid to three independent but mutually related events happened in the year of 1984: dialogues with Christian student communities on Christian’s social involvement, the issue of the Evangelical Declaration on “Christian Faith in Times of Radical Social Changes”, and Hong Kong Church Representatives’ Delegation to Beijing. The reflection and participation of Teng on the above issues, as shown in this paper, will help us to identify the church-state challenges being faced by the Hong Kong Evangelicals in such a critical moment of the Hong Kong history.
