ABSTRACT

This article explores the Christian socialism by Sandel and Tawney and their criticism of Anglo-American capitalism and meritocracy. It also points out that Christian theology has actually had an important impact on the development of Western economies from a historical perspective. Unfortunately, most of them only emphasize individual freedom, responsibility, and economic growth, ignoring equality and community responsibility that are also the elements of Christian theology. Based on the analysis of capitalism, meritocracy, and Christian economic ethics, the author argues that the economic outlook of Christianity should be a balanced fusion of capitalism and socialism. Furthermore, Christianity’s emphasis of the holiness, justice, and transcendence of God and human sinfulness can help to form a sense of fellowship, and motivate those economically successful people to be humble, considerate and caring for the poor in society.
