ABSTRACT

This is an analysis of the functions which parables played in the conflicts between Jesus and the Pharisees as recorded in the Gospel of Luke. The study traces the stages of the conflicts, the points of contention, the political implications of the religious differences. In the dialogue with the Pharisees, Jesus used parables to stimulate reflection, to redefine reality, to teach the populace and to create disequilibration in the opponents. All this is done in the hope that a change of heart will take place amongst the audience. The parables thus used are not only rhetorical devices but also means of transformation. In order to facilitate cognitive and behavioral transformation, parables used by the Lucan Jesus often included disequilibrating elements so that his audience who experienced scheme failure might move on to a new level of understanding.
